CSore - For Ensemble XXI
csore
ABOUT
CSore is a live-generating graphic score based on a match in the video game Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. Each of the ten instrumentalists takes on the role of one player in the match, receiving instructions for events that happen in-game.
INSTRUMENTATION
The piece is written for 10 pitched instruments.
A conductor is not needed.
SETUP
The piece is set out to be an installation piece, but it can also be played as a staged performance. The audience is free to move around the performers.
Display
Each player must have their own digital device to view the score.
Currently it works best on any type of computer, but a version for mobile devices such as phones and pads is being worked on.
Duration
A game consists of multiple rounds with an average length of around 2 minutes. For this performance you will be playing five rounds, so around 10 minutes in total. The order of the rounds is chosen randomly, everyone is playing the same round at a time.
Teams
Counter-Strike is a team game, and for the performance this setting will be continued. There are two teams playing against each other (G2 and GamerLegion), each c0nsisting of 5 players. On stage, a head-to-head layout should therefore be adopted, with the two teams facing each other. Examples for this are, but are not limited to:
Players
As mentioned, each player and their in-game events within a round will be assigned to one of the instrumentalists. Instrumentalists should be playing a pitched instrument.
The players for G2 are: m0NESY, HooXi, jks, huNter-, NiKo.
The players for GamerLegion are: Keoz, siuhy, acoR, isak, iM.
NOTES ON PERFORMANCE
The lines
The main component of the score are the moving lines, which will be active while the rounds are running. Depending on the resolution, different approaches to the interpretation can be taken.
You can choose whether you look at one line, the whole picture, or anything in between. In general, movement corresponds to playing, but it is your interpretation if there is enough movement to play.
Pauses
In between each round, there is a five second pause for everyone. The start of the next round will be announced to you by a 5 second countdown in red.
Death
A player can die within a round, in which case your screen will turn black, and you should stop playing. This will not be announced by a countdown.
In-game events and round starts
At the start of the round and for every new event within a round you will be assigned a new element for the following parameters: Notes, roles, as well as the resolution of the lines.
Each new event will be announced to you by a 5 second countdown in green.
There can be a slight overlap as you adjust when new material is presented to you, except for death, that is instant.
Notes
You will be assigned a set of two to three notes that you must use as your pitch material. The range is free but could be determined by the lines.
Roles
Generally, each team should focus on the happenings within their team, listening to and playing with each other as much as possible. In addition to this, however, a player can get assigned one of two roles: attack or support.
As an attacker, you take initiative. You can choose to actively disrupt and mingle with the enemy team through your playing. An attacker intensifies the dynamics, tessitura and rhythmic density they play with. Dynamic range is mp to ff.
As a supporter, your goal is to support your fellow teammates by interacting with them and finding ways to play with them. You do not take initiative, and your focus is more on listen to the others. Your dynamic range is pp to mf.
Please treat the dynamics relative to the natural loudness of your instrument.
A SHORT SUMMARY
The piece is divided into rounds.
Within each round there are events that change what happens on your score.
Notes: Only use the notes on your screen.
Roles: Attack if you are an attacker, support if you are a supporter.
Countdowns announce events and round endings.
Stop playing if you are dead.
