Nils Benedikt Meier is a German musician based in Aarhus, Denmark. He holds a master’s degree in choir conducting from the Royal Academy of Music Aarhus, where he studied under the tutelage of Carsten Seyer-Hansen and Søren Kinch Hansen. He holds a bachelor’s degree in composition from the Royal Conservatoire Antwerp, where he studied with Wim Henderickx, Alain Craens and Bram Van Camp, as well as a bachelor’s degree in composition from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, where he studied with Stuart MacRae.
Nils is the conductor of Jysk Akademisk Kor, an ambitious and experienced classical choir, as well as of Musikstuderendes Kor ved Aarhus Universitet, a young and dynamic ensemble of university students. Nils has been the assistant conductor for Aarhus Pigekor in the 2024/25 season. In April 2024 he got to compose for and conduct the Aarhus Jazz Orchestra. He has been the assistant choir conductor at the German- Scandinavian Music Week for three years in a row.
Notable recent events include a collaboration between Jysk Akademisk Kor and Aarhus Symfoniorkester, performing works by Bo Holten and Niels W. Gade, as well as a concert tour to his hometown of Leipzig, and participation in the European Choir Games with the same choir. Another collaboration with Aarhus Symfoniorkester is set to take place in 2026 with Brahms’ Requiem.
For Nils, creating and performing music is heavily linked to simplicity, reflection and human connection. He is passionate about collaborating with musicians and artists around the world and is aspiring to create immersive experiences.
Notable past projects include founding and directing the chamber choir Lucia Ensemble, being the assistant conductor with the Ayr Choral Union, working for Stegreif Improvising Orchestra, as well as at the Ancient Trance Festival. He has composed a varied array of works, including for Aarhus Jazz Orchestra, the Antwerp Cathedral Organ, Hebrides Ensemble, and a live-generated graphic score for Convergence Seminar.
